In just a few weeks, billions of Cicadas will flock to parts of 15 states, DC
It’s a start that has taken 17 years to make, and in a matter of weeks, it will catch the attention of millions of Americans.
Sean Jane Kritsky, a regular Kekada expert at Mount St. Joseph’s University in Cincinnati and dean of behavioral and natural sciences, said. Billions of cicadas are likely to appear in the states and Washington, D.C., in late April or the first week of May.
This year’s group, known as Brood X, is the largest of the 17-year-old in terms of density and geography. Kritsky said it in the United States today, and the name may sound dramatic, but “X” is technically the Roman numeral 10.
Where will the Brood X cicadas emerge?
“Basically, there are three big patches where you’re likely to see the largest crowd of Kikada,” Kritsky said.:
Northeast corner of Pennsylvania, almost all of Maryland, parts of Delaware and New Jersey, and parts of New York.. Ohio, almost the entire state of Indiana, parts of eastern Illinois, and the northwestern and eastern parts of Kentucky.. Dispersion in western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, western Tennessee, and North Georgia.
Where will Brood X cicadas emerge?
Kritsky said, There are basically three big patches where you’re likely to see the largest crowd of cicadas.
Northeast corner of Pennsylvania, almost all parts of Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey, and parts of New York.
Ohio, almost the entire state of Indiana, parts of eastern Illinois, and the northwestern and eastern parts of Kentucky.
In western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee and western Tennessee, and northern Georgia.
When are the cicadas coming?
Kritsky said, When the soil temperature drops to 64 degrees a few inches below the ground, cicadas will begin to emerge. This usually happens on the first or second day when temperatures reach the 80s.
Apart from long-term climate trends, it is difficult to make predictions,” Kritsky said. But usually, these temperature markers come first in the southern states. Therefore, the conditions for the appearance of Brood X may appear around the first part of May in North Georgia, while Cincinnati may reach this point near the middle of May.
