Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the closing match of the English Premier League’s Week 20. The Reds posted a 3-1 win, snapping a four-game winless skid in the league games, which saw them losing the top spot in the standings.
Jurgen Klopp’s side posted its first EPL win in 2021, overcoming a tough opening 45 minutes, but pretty routinely once breaking Tottenham’s lock late in the first half.
Liverpool created four big chances against a side that notoriously don't give them up. They had 11 shots inside the box, restricting Spurs to 1. That despite losing Fabinho and then Joel Matip. Can't overstate how impressive that performance was given the circumstances

Roberto Firmino drew the first blood in the fourth minute of the injury time of the opening half. Sadio Mane shook off his defenders on the right side, calmly passing the ball to Firmino, who didn’t have any troubles while scoring.
That was a huge shock for the hosts who lost Harry Kane in the meantime due to an injury. Trent Alexander-Arnold landed another blow to the Spurs, scoring just two minutes inside the second half, but the home team bounced back through Pierre-Emile Hojbert in the 49th minute.
We then saw a pretty interesting battle, with Liverpool slowly taking over the initiative on the field, and imposing its own tempo. The Reds scored one goal, which was later disallowed, due to Firmino’s handballing.
However, Liverpool reached its third of the day through Sadio Mane in the 65th minute. The Senegalese was the man of the match in tonight’s clash, dominating in every aspect of play.
After eight games without a loss, the Spurs had to lay down their weapons against a better rival. They are now sixth with 8 points fewer than Man City, who is atop the league, but with four points fewer than fourth-placed Liverpool, with a game in hand.

As for the Reds, a negative streak is ended, and that is what matters the most. Liverpool has 37 points and is four points behind the Citizens. This win is very important for the champs not only because of the EPL, but the Champions League as well. Their match against RB Leipzig will come pretty fast, meaning that Liverpool needs to improve its form.
Up next, Klopp and the company visit West Ham, then host Brighton before clashing with Man City at Anfield on February 7.
Tottenham goes to Brighton on Sunday, before playing against the big local rivals, Chelsea, next Thursday. Just two days later, the Spurs host WBA.
