The Knoxville Police Department said the incident took place at Austin-East Magnet High School
.This Monday afternoon, there was a shooting at a Tennessee school. According to what was reported by the police, so far, one dead and one injured officer has been registered.
The incident took place at Austin-East Magnet High School, where there are dozens of police officers.
According to the preliminary data of the investigation, the authorities went to the place because there was an armed individual in the educational center who opened fire when the agents approached, which caused injuries to one of the order members.
The note adds that a man, who did not identify, lost his life in this event. At the same time, another was detained pending the completion of the investigations.
The wounded policeman was taken to a hospital, where he is out of danger.
“Several shooting victims were recorded, including an officer from the Knoxville Police Department. Research remains in development at this time. Please avoid the area,” said the local Police Department on its Twitter account.
Authorities said a site was opened for families to meet at a ballpark adjacent to the high school.
Local media conclude the event and point to a detainee. They also explain that there is a police officer among the victims of the shooting who is in charge of this school’s security.
Bob Thomas, superintendent of Knox County schools, clarified on his Twitter account that the building that houses the institute has already been secured and that students who were not involved in the incident were sent home with their families.
For his part, the governor of Tennessee, Bill Lee, said that the situation was “very difficult and tragic”, but did not provide further details.
The event comes at a time when the debate over weapons in the United States has been fueled, where President Joe Biden announced limited-scope measures to tackle the violence and demanded that Congress stop tolerating a problem that he described as a “shame at the international level.”
Mass shootings in Georgia and Colorado have killed at least 18 people two weeks after Biden unveiled a series of measures aimed at curbing gun violence on Thursday.
Still, he acknowledged that Congress would not be able to do much on its own if it did not stop its efforts to control pistols and rifles.
According to data provided by Biden four days ago, 106 people die from firearms every day in the United States, every month there are 53 femicides committed with pistols, and armed violence “impacts the black and Latino population much more.
